This topic is a tricky one – most apartment leases forbid alterations that physically change the apartment. In fact, an alteration as simple as putting a nail in the wall to hang a picture could technically void your lease, depending on it’s terms. The most important thing you can do to protect your self (and your home) is to carefully read through every part of your lease before making any alterations to your apartment.
So lets get to the sticky part of all this. Below I’ve listed 3 simple alterations you can make to your apartment that are sure to make a BIG impression.
Room Divider
It’s easy to alter the feel of a room with a simple divider. This can be placed behind couches, or in corners to obstruct the boxy feel of a room. New Back-Splash

That’s right, with a little research about the materials you use, it’s simple to give your apartment’s kitchen a new back-splash without voiding your lease. Tin back-splash tiles like the one’s found at American Tin Ceiling Co. can be affixed to the wall with (believe it or not) clear silicone caulk, as this wont hurt the wall and can easily be peeled off when you move out. Just keep in mind that any time you leave something against the wall (even a picture frame) the paint under it will degrade at a slower rate, making the space under it brighter with the object is removed. So you’re thinking “duh” I knew that… and we agree, painting isn’t exactly an out of this world idea when it comes to apartment alterations.
